・故人を間近でアリアリと目撃したという同様の証言（A）は無数にある。その全てが作話だとは思えない。たぶん大半が実体験なのであろう。だが、そういった事例はその故人が死後にも何らかの形で存在しているという根拠にはならない。なぜなら、ドッペルゲンガーがそのわかりやすい反証となる。
・ドッペルゲンガーを間近でアリアリと目撃したという証言（B）も無数にある（*1）。なので B は錯覚や誤認だが、A は本物だと主張するのは無理がある。ドッペルゲンガーの場合は生きている人物の写し姿を本人や他人が目撃するものゆえ、当然ながらその目撃によってその対象人物が「死後にも何らかの形で存在している」ことの証拠になりえない。
・A と B の間で具体的な観察内容に大きな差異はない。なのに A は死後の存在の証拠となり、B はそうならない…というのでは解釈に無理がある。
・むしろ、A という現象も B という現象も同様の機序・メカニズムで発生していると考えるべきだろう。
・上述のようなドッペルゲンガーを引き合いに出した反証に対して、Raymond Moody や「死後の生」肯定派は次のように反論するだろう。
・A も B も「存在者の写し」の顕現という点では同じだ。ゆえに B の、ドッペルゲンガーが実在する人間の写しの顕現である、というのと同じ意味で、A の故人の幽霊も、あの世に実在する故人の写しの顕現だと言える…とまぁ、こんな論調になる筈。
・だが、そのような反論は多数の Slender Man の目撃事例（*2）によって簡単に覆すことができる。
・Slender Man は創作された虚構の存在ゆえ、実在しない。その虚構の存在を大勢がアリアリと目撃している。
・さらに "The Philip Experiment" のように創作した架空の幽霊を召喚した事例（*3）もある。
・Alan Moore（有名な作家）による
Nick Redfern：自身が創作した登場人物に、食堂で対面した作家の体験。（途中：その4） (2019-02-08)
という証言もある。他にも
アニメの主人公がベッド脇に出現した。 (2018-11-28)

といった事例まで挙げれば、「虚構の存在」の顕現の事例にはきりがないほどになる。
・こういった事例を考慮すれば、いわゆる幽霊の目撃事例は「死後の生」の裏付けとはならず、むしろ「虚構の存在」の顕現の一例と見なされるべきだろう。
