But we live in a materialistic age, in a materialistic culture, where materialistic values are dominant, especially in academia. So I have to imagine it's been kind of a balancing act for you to do this research in that environment. You know, I was a materialist when I started, and I'm not now. I just can't imagine how a material conception of the world can explain these phenomena. There must be some non-material aspect of us, as humans, that can explain some of these things. And some of the encouraging data is that there have been studies recently of scientists in Scotland, in Belgium, in Brazil, and in the U.S., surveying what these scientists think about the mind and the brain. In each of these studies, about 50% of scientists say that the mind and the brain are separate things, that the mind is not just what the brain does. And that would not have been true if you had asked this 50 years ago. (0:47:42)
