Now, you might wonder what on earth does the story of Mothman have to do with alien abductions? Well, the answer is quite a lot. Again, just so you know, that's me, that's Mothman. For people who don't know, the story of the Mothman goes back to 1966 and the town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia. And in late 1966, a number of people in a nearby town called Clendenin reported seeing this strange humanoid figure like that with bright red eyes and huge wings flying through the sky. (0:57:43)
And sightings then began to focus on the town of Point Pleasant. And what happened from there was that over the course of the next year, you had numerous UFO sightings, many black reports, and this particular case, the Mothman sightings. (0:58:02)
And the only way you could kind of describe it is like as a flying humanoid type creature, which of course there should not be anything like that living anywhere. Now, and again, just as a little aside, a friend of mine, excuse me, a friend of mine, Ken Gerhard, Ken wrote a book called Encounters with Flying Humanoids. And he covers Mothman extensively in that. So that book will give you a good sort of coverage of the story. (0:58:33)
And the reason I mention that is because Ken only lives just down in San Antonio. And so if you want to learn more about the Mothman, his book is a really good sort of primer to the story. But people were talking about seeing this strange creature, the Mothman, all around town and abductees, contactees, UFO witnesses were being visited by the men in black, by the women in black. In some of the women in black cases, they would knock on UFO witnesses doors and claim to be taking, we're taking a census, can we come in? Or, you know, we're doing a survey for the government, can we come in, that sort of thing. And what's interesting is, you know, they always try and find a way to have the person, the homeowner, whoever's at home, to invite them in. (0:59:25)
And John Keel, who wrote a book on all this called The Mothman Prophecies, Keel noted that, you know, this angle of where they always needed to be invited in was kind of like the parallels with the old vampire legends where, you know, in the stories, in the folklore, the vampires had to be invited into the home. And that's the same with the men in black and the women in black. They don't force their way in. They try and find a way to be invited into the home. (0:59:54)
So that's sort of like a little weird, creepy aside. But the sightings of the Mothman and the men in black around town went on for just over a year. And just to give you an idea, this was 66, 67, and just to give you an idea of how things are today, the town has sort of really embraced the phenomenon of Mothman to the point where they have this yearly festival called the Mothman Festival, which, just like George Van Tassel's outdoor events in California, the ones in Point Pleasant which are put on every year, they attract audiences anywhere from about 8,000 to 10, 11,000 every year.
