I had been going to science fiction conventions. Bob Cornett and I wanted to write some science fiction, and we thought at the conventions, we could meet the editors, and it would be helpful if they knew who we were. (0:45:13)

And there was going to be a debate about UFOs, and there were some guys coming up from the Center for UFO Studies, and I was going to be on the panel of the anti-UFO guys. And one of the guys was Frederick Pohl, who was a well-known science fiction writer. I think one of the other guys was George R.R. Martin before he became George R.R. Martin. And when we got there, it was only Don Schmidt. And I thought, well, it's a debate, I'll just switch sides. (0:45:41)

So I debated UFOs with the two science fiction writers. Afterwards, I talked to Don, and pretty soon I got a phone call, and they were about to launch an investigation into Roswell. And they thought with my military background, I would be able to understand some of the things the military people were talking about that a civilian who'd not served may not know. And that kind of led into all the UFO stuff. (0:46:04)

I did make a joke of I paid for part of my college, what I called the Saga Scholarship. Saga was a magazine that had a side publication called UFO Report. At the time, in the mid-1970s, there were like six UFO magazines, and I wrote for a number of those. I was able to earn enough money doing that to kind of help with my college tuition. (0:46:27)

So that kind of brought me all into the world of the UFO.
