And I thought, oh, thank God, they shook his hand. So I'm very happy there now. And I know I'm, I know my friends are too. This has been quite a life. (0:01:28)

And it didn't start in 1985. I didn't know this, but it started long before that. Oh, incidentally, there's a new edition of Communion out, which you can, has a new introduction by me and the audio version of it is available on the Amazon UK website. The print versions aren't because there's still a print edition of for sale here from a previous publisher. (0:01:57)

But anyway, it's it exists. This is Unknown Country. This is my website. And you can certainly come to it. You'd be more most welcome. And now let's start going back a little bit into the past, into life as it was for me and my wife, and our little boy. (0:02:19)

Back in the early 80s. This is our cabin in upstate New York. It's about 90 miles north of New York City. And then in a rural area, but not terribly isolated. In other words, there's other cabins through the trees and so forth and so on. And we were we had bought that cabin the previous March before it happened, the March of 1984. And I that summer began to have splitting headaches and became more and more apprehensive without knowing why. (0:02:52)

I now know that the headaches were because I was suppressing things that were happening that I didn't want to think about. I didn't know that then, of course. Then came October of 1985. And something, excuse me, just a minute, let me get things organized here. Something happened at the cabin. We had some friends and, you know, Annie Gottlieb and Jacques Sandalescu at the cabin. (0:03:24)

And we were there on an October weekend. It was a very quiet weekend. It was always quiet at the cabin. And in the middle of the night, there was a lot of light. And I thought at the time that the chimney, that chimney there you can see, had malfunctioned and the roof might be on fire. (0:03:54)

So I leaped up out of bed. And there was a terrific bang. And my little boy started screaming. And I realized at that point the light went out, that it was not a fire. I realized as I ran downstairs to my little boy's room, our room was upstairs and his was down, that Jacques and Annie had wakened up. (0:04:25)

And I said to them, it's all right. And meaning that there was no fire. But not knowing what Jacques had seen, which is he had waked up and it was as bright as day. He thought it was 10 o'clock in the morning and thought he had overslept. And then suddenly it just became night again. Annie had heard something scurrying across the floor upstairs and assumed it was our cats. (0:04:45)

But it wasn't our cats because they weren't in the cabin. I went into my son's room and comforted him and went back upstairs and went to sleep. What I didn't know was that someone very unusual had been in that cabin. Unless they're not unusual and only a few people remember their presence in their lives. Because this is something that's been in my life all my life. (0:05:17)

And I was just talking a few minutes ago to someone else who's in the same boat. If it's in your life, it might be that it's always in your life. And you remember it at times and you don't. I remember now that at the age of 12, they left my life and I became very depressed. (0:05:38)

I ended up at a doctor because I was such a sad child. By the time I was 13 or 14, I didn't know why I felt like that. Oddly enough, the doctor was an army general. So I suppose somebody knew what was going on. In any case, the childhood part of this disappeared from my memory completely until many years later. (0:06:08)

On that night, I was, I guess, used to pushing this aside because I didn't want it to be there. I was very, very frightened of it. There's a documentary, I think it's on Discovery Plus, and I believe you can find it on YouTube now. It's called The Visitors. It was on the Travel Channel a few weeks ago. (0:06:37)

And it starts out with my reaction under hypnosis to what happened on that night in October. This is the bed that we slept in. This is where all of the events that took place that happened there in that bed. And I was, that was where I was taken. That's the bed I was taken from. And this is what was in the room. (0:07:04)

And this is what I didn't want to remember. And there are a lot of reasons I understand now why you don't. I think the best way to describe why is to describe what happened when my friend and co-author of Supernatural, Jeff Kripal, Jeff is a professor of religion at Rice University in Texas. We were at the Esalen Institute in upstate California, northern California, and we had a conference. (0:07:36)

And at these conferences, people always want to stay in the room with me. And I say to them, you're not going to like it. And Jeff is a very close friend, and he said, you know, Whitley, I'm the psychic. I'm a total blind and deaf person, psychically. (0:07:49)

Nothing will happen to me. And I said, that's not correct, Jeff. This is much different from what you think. And it did happen to him. They did show up in the room. That was during the period after 2015 when the visitors were waking me up every night. And we'll get to that in a few minutes. They don't wake me up so often now, but they did for a long time, wake me up at three o'clock in the morning. (0:08:21)

I'll show you an actual video of that happening in a few minutes. In any case, he said, I want to. And so he did. I slept in. And they came in. They have a room there, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean. And it's like the slot. It's because they like to come in off of... they're very shy for reasons that I don't fully understand. I wish I did. I wish we all did. (0:08:42)

They'd like to come in. They come into that room when I'm there many times. And they came in that night. And Jeff's response, he didn't see anything, but he responded this feeling. He said, it felt like the world was collapsing around me. And I heard my own voice from deep inside myself say, oh my God, this is why. And I'll be very specific here. (0:09:08)

We live inside a river. It's the river of time. Every moment is coming toward us. And in our lives, everything is always new. They are outside of time looking in. And if we get too close to them, we're going to suddenly see our whole futures, our whole lives. That's not what we're here for. (0:09:42)

We're here to live those lives and to live and experience them and have the full experience of the wonder and surprise of life, to imprint our souls with these lives. And they are outside. Who are they? Well, let me tell you a story. Anne, after we published Communion, thousands upon thousands of letters began to come in to the point where we were totally unprepared for this. We certainly didn't expect it to happen. (0:10:11)

The mail men began bringing up great baskets and bags of mail and just dumping on the floor of our apartment in heaps. I didn't know what to do. I said, Annie, there's so many, I don't even know how to throw them out. By the way, Anne took this over the second she understood what was going on. (0:10:35)

It was as if she knew exactly how to handle this from the very beginning. It was absolutely uncanny. She said, throw them out. We're not throwing them out. We're reading them. I said, I can't read all these letters. She said, well, I can. And she did. She hired a secretary, Laurie Barnes. She said, I'll need a secretary. (0:10:55)

And I said, well, okay, I'll call Manpower and we'll find a temp. She said, no, no, we'll find the secretary in the letters. The secretary will find us. Two days later, she says, I found our secretary. Here's her letter. And it was a letter from a very nicely handwritten, beautiful penmanship letter from a woman who described herself as a singer and an actress. And I said, she says she's a singer and an actress here. (0:11:21)

She's not a secretary. She said, have you ever heard of her? I said, well, no. She said, look at that handwriting. That's a professional hand. She's a secretary, all right, because she'd be starving otherwise. And not only that, she lives two doors away from us and she's meant for us. (0:11:37)

She called her. She was Anne's secretary for 15 years. They cataloged a hundred thousand letters over the next 15 years and they are now in an archive, 35,000, but I'm not sure how many, somewhere north of 20,000 of these letters. She kept in the catalog the most detailed letters and they're now archived, thanks to Jeff Kripal, at Rice University in Texas in something called the Archive of the Impossible with quite a few other wonderful archives of material like this. (0:12:17)

So, we are not prepared to leave time. For us, when we die and our bodies, we leave behind our bodies in the natural world, then is when we leave time. This part of our lives is like going through a dark tunnel and meeting one surprise after another. The next part, we rise out of this into the light and we look back over our lives. (0:12:51)

That's what this life review is all about. We look back over our lives and we find ourselves this way. This is what we are. This is how we are doing. These people, when they come into our lives, they interrupt that process and it's like you would be dead and alive at the same time if they really embraced you and you got into living in the same level of knowledge they have. (0:13:25)

But my life is proof, and the life of many other close encounter witnesses is proof, that you can benefit greatly from their presence in your life without stepping over that line and making your life pointless. And they are trying very hard to help us. They have two great messages, and this is repeated in the close encounter experience throughout the experience. (0:13:55)

One is that nuclear wars and nuclear weapons are very dangerous. And if you get into the literature, you'll find many stories of them interfering at missile sites and so forth, both here and in Russia. And they're all over the Ukraine right now, probably for that reason. And the other thing is that the environment is in danger. (0:14:24)

That is the first message I received from them. And it is. We can see it every day in our lives now. So they were right about both things, but what does it tell you? It tells you they're not our enemies. It tells you they want us to survive. Otherwise, why give us those messages? On the one hand, on the other hand, why not do a better job of it and give it to the darn presidents and prime ministers of the world and the Putins and whatnot? Give it to them. (0:14:49)

But that's not how they do. They give it to us because they are part of us and about the people. And that gets back to these blue guys. And I'll tell you now a little bit more of the story of Lori Barnes. Lori wrote us a letter, and in the letter she described an experience that she had had as a young woman in the 1950s. She was pregnant with her first child, I believe her first child, and alone in bed at night. (0:15:23)

Her husband, they were performers, and her husband was out on a gig. He was a pianist. And she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye. She was reading. It was about 11 o'clock at night. And she looked up. She sees one of these. (0:15:35)

This is from the communion film, by the way. And of course, she's absolutely horrified because in 1954, I believe it was, that wasn't something that was on anybody's agenda at all. There were no alien stories. I mean, that was something in the dime novels in those days or the science fiction shows on television and not much of that. (0:16:00)

So she's horrified, of course. And it proceeds to say, do not be afraid. We're not here for you. We're interested in the girl child you're carrying, which didn't help much. Now, you notice girl child. It's 1954. In those days, we couldn't tell whether a baby was a girl or a boy. (0:16:26)

And it turned out it was a girl when the baby was born. Then she's recoiling. And it says, puts its hand on her wrist and says very gently, why do you fear us? And she says, because you're so ugly, which is accurate. And believe me, when you've seen them in person, they're much uglier than this. And then it says something absolutely fascinating that I want you to just hold in your minds. (0:16:54)

I'm not going to go too far with this train of thought, but I want it to be there. It says, one day, my dear, you will look just like us. And I want to now ask you a question. We all think in terms of aliens from another planet, and humans are here. But look at the caterpillar and the butterfly. Are we the caterpillars? Would the butterfly not look monstrous to the caterpillar? Who are we? (0:17:26)

And now I'm going to go on and speak about more experiences. Now, after the experience in 1985, let me get into the story of December the 26th first. On December the 26th, 1985, it was a very lovely post-Christmas day. We had leftover goose and things for dinner, and we went on a little walk after dinner in the snow. (0:18:01)

It was just a beautiful, quiet evening, the three of us. Went to bed, and the next morning when I woke up, I was inexplicably distraught. I thought there'd been an owl in the house, because I remembered seeing these big black eyes. And over the next week, I became increasingly distraught. I became desperate. I lost it, would be the best way to put it. (0:18:34)

This is how I looked in those days. This is a little bit later. This is about six weeks after that. But look at that face. You can see the haunted eyes and the sense of desperation, or at least I can. Now, I did not know anything about aliens and abductions or anything like that at all. (0:18:56)

I didn't know anything much about flying saucers, no more than anyone would. It wasn't a big subject. It'd been a big deal when I was a kid. We lived and breathed that stuff, because there was flying saucer stories in the newspapers every other day. But by the time the 80s rolled around, that had long since faded, and I didn't think about it much, or at all, actually. (0:19:20)

Now, I began to remember more, more than an owl coming into the house. I remember being kidnapped, and I remembered seeing these bizarre figures. And I began to ache in my rear end, and I had a painful spot in my head, and I kept remembering somebody putting a needle into me. And Annie and I started to fight. (0:19:45)

I got the idea that I was going insane, and if I did, and she was still married to me, she would be trapped in the marriage and have a husband with no ability to support her. So I started trying to drive her off, and it had been such a very happy marriage. I finally thought, it became pretty clear in my mind what I remembered, but this was obviously impossible. I had written a couple of years before this book, War Day, which had turned out to have a lot of political impact. (0:20:27)

Parts of it were read on the floor of the Congress, and it changed the direction of American policy when it came to nuclear war in ways that the White House didn't like. And one of Ted Kennedy's assistants had called me and said, watch out because they might do dirty tricks. They might do a political tax audit. (0:20:48)

I don't know if you have those in this country, but in the U.S., if you get into trouble and annoy the White House too much, they're liable to audit your taxes to the point of almost extinction in retaliation. So I was sort of expecting that, and then I thought, what if someone came in here and drugged me? And I called the New York State Criminal Investigation Division, but they couldn't figure out this wild story, basically, and they just sort of said, well, if you have any hard evidence, please call us back. (0:21:19)

At that point, my marriage, which had been a very, very happy marriage, was collapsing. It was a disaster for us. You know, we met, well, just this is not really in the talk, but I'll tell you. I moved to New York from London in early 1969. I was having my usual luck with girls. I went to singles bars, and I wanted dates. (0:22:00)

I wanted girls in my life. Unfortunately, I'm very obsessive. I'm about telling the truth. In the singles bars, everybody's an airline pilot or a doctor or lawyer, but I was unfortunately a media planner. I didn't want to say anything else, and that's a pretty low-end job in the advertising business, so I was getting absolutely nowhere. All of the girls were going with the doctors, lawyers, and other media planners, which they were all, everyone. (0:22:22)

Anyway, that didn't work. And then I saw in the Village Voice, a little local sort of weekly newspaper, an ad for something called Mindmates. And I thought, well, I'll try this. And I sent for the packet that they paid my five dollars or whatever it was, and I sent for the packet, and I had got this huge envelope filled with form after form to fill out and essays to write. (0:22:53)

I thought, my God, I thought this was just a, come on, this is a serious deal. I filled the whole thing out and took days, two days, a whole weekend, and sent it in. You see, there's something funny here already, because dating services that act through newspapers don't send you things like that. (0:23:19)

So about a week later, I get this letter back, and it has, I think, five names in it. There's something rather odd about the names. All of the last names are the last names of fish, like trout and salmon and things, not S-A-L, S-A, you know, the regular salmon. And I'm thinking, what in the world is this? These are all fake names. (0:23:41)

There's only one that's not fake, this Maddox, but I'm going to call one of the fish anyway, to see whether or not it's fake. And it wasn't. She was real. But we didn't get along at all well. And I thought, I hope it's not all like this. I'm staying away from the fish now. I'm going for the one that's not a fish. (0:23:57)

And that was Ann Maddox. And so we made a date for lunch. And she was receptionist to the office building just down the street from mine. And I walked in. I remember it like it was yesterday. I saw this incredibly beautiful girl at the reception desk. And I thought, boy, I hope Ann Maddox looks like her. (0:24:29)

And I said, I'm here for Ann Maddox to take her to lunch. And she said, I'm Ann. I thought, oh boy, we were not apart again for more than two weeks for the rest of our time in this world. And as I said earlier, once she heard that story, I thought, oh my god, I've been trying to push her away. (0:24:57)

Now she's going to say, yes, let's get a divorce right now. But she instead said, I don't remember her saying, now I don't have to get a divorce. Yeah, I guess I thought she said, oh, thank god, I thought you were going crazy. But I think she remembers it differently. But that's marriage. Many of you are married, and all of the men are always wrong about what they remember. (0:25:27)

And all of the men are always right, so I'm sure her story is the correct one. In any case, I went on a journey. My brother, who is interested in UFOs, had sent me a book for Christmas called Science and the UFOs. And I thought, oh, it's another dull present from Richard. Okay, I will pretend to read it. I'll leave it aside for a week or two and then thank him and say what a good book it was. (0:25:54)

And then he'll send me another Flying Saucer book next year, probably. But I did read it, because I did remember this. And it did seem like, it seemed like I saw these big eyes and all this. I was, I remembered it initially as being in a tent with giant insects. And you know, you can't, you're not in a tent with giant insects. And I'm much too big to fit in a wasp nest. (0:26:19)

So where the hell was I? And it seemed connected to this stuff. And I I read the book and I was paging through it. It wasn't connecting with me until suddenly, toward the end, there was a description of something called an alien abduction. And I was astonished. I didn't, because it sounded like what happened to me. And in the description of this, there was a man mentioned, Bud Hopkins. And it turned out, the way this is all set up, somebody, there's somebody weaving behind the scenes here. There's weaving this carpet. He lived a few blocks from us. (0:27:06)

And so I telephoned him and we went to see him. And he turned out to be an absolutely lovely man. Very supportive. And he introduced me. He wanted to hypnotize me. But he was an artist, not a hypnotist. And I thought, no, no. I don't really know what's going on here. And I'm not sure I understand what hypnosis is even exactly. (0:27:32)

And I'm not a person who's going to be hypnotized very readily, especially not by an artist who doesn't, I mean, I just didn't understand. (0:27:39)

There was no credential. He proceeds to introduce me to one of the world's leading forensic hypnotists, Dr. Donald Klein. He was at that time the head of the New York State Department of Psychiatry. And one of the leading psychiatrists in the United States and in the world. And the leading forensic hypnotist. A forensic hypnotist is someone who can hypnotize you and help you remember things that you have lost, like you're knocked down by a car. (0:28:11)

And he can help you remember the license plate number. And he had solved 72 crimes at that point in his life with his techniques. So, of course, after communion came out, the intelligence community went nuts, planting story after story in the media about how hypnosis is so unreliable and so on and so forth. (0:28:38)

They really began to beat the drums. But it's not true. In the hands of a professional like Don Klein, it's a very reliable method of remembering things. And if you watch the Discovery documentary, I'm not going to play this here because it's hard for me, you will hear the screaming that occurred when I first remembered seeing those blue figures. That memory came into my mind unexpectedly in the first hypnosis I did with Dr. Klein. And it was recorded by Bud. And the raw terror in that screaming, it just goes right through you to this day, goes through me to this day. (0:29:21)

Anyway, Annie was fascinated by all of this. And she listened to the hypnosis tapes. But she kept saying, Whitley, there's more to it. There's more to it. The next thing I knew, she had found a book by a Dr. Jacques Vallée. How many of you know who Dr. Vallée is? A good number. Well, Dr. Vallée is one of the most brilliant people in the whole UFO world. (0:29:50)

He is a cyberneticist. He's an IT professional. And he does this sort of, did it as an aside. But now it became so encompassing and so interesting that he's now doing it full time. And reading any one of his books will be very mind opening. But this particular book, Passport to Magonia, From Folklore to Flying Saucers, is a book of cases of UFO experiences dating back thousands of years, where he shows modern UFO experiences and how they relate to old, old stories of the gods and the fairy folk and so forth. (0:30:26)

And this is part of the weave of human experience. We saw earlier, the military shooting at them. Well, they're shooting at them to this day, all the time. I'm working on a new book and the fact that they shoot first and ask questions later is a big part of the book. So they're shooting at something that has probably been part of the human experience forever. (0:30:54)

And it's fairly stupid. You know, when the tsunami hit the Indian Ocean, there's a little island in that ocean that's part of India, on which there lives a tribe who are totally isolated from the outside world. They have never seen anyone off of their own island and they're protected by the Indian government. Nobody's allowed to go there. (0:31:20)

But after the tsunami, the government was concerned about their welfare and it sent a helicopter to circle the island to see if they needed help. And what happens was, a warrior comes running out onto the beach and starts shooting arrows at the helicopter. That's the US military and the UK military and the other militaries that are shooting at them. We're shooting arrows at the helicopter and we have no idea that we are a little bitty bit on a little island in the middle of a great unknown. We don't know where we are. And that makes us innocent. (0:32:03)

And it's part of the reasons that, despite all of the toughness, the visitors are visitors. And I call them visitors, not aliens, for a reason. Because as was implied earlier, they're in some way connected to us and part of us. I wouldn't say I understand how, but they are. They love us or they would not be here worrying about nuclear weapons and our planet's environmental welfare and so forth. (0:32:38)

So she opened my mind to more by introducing me to this book and to Jacques. Now, you know the first debunkers were astronomers, or I guess they were astrologers in those days, who worked for, and this is in Passport to Magonia, the Japanese emperor in the, I think, the 14th century. And they were apparently seeing a lot of UFOs darting around in the skies, like we see now, and he demanded an explanation. (0:33:10)

And their explanation remains the primary explanation, just in different words, for all of the debunking that goes on to this day. They said, your majesty, it's just the wind making the stars sway. So that, and the wind still making the stars sway, believe me. All right, now let me see where I am on time, or not. No, I'm good. We, our life went on after Communion was published, and well before, a little before Communion was published, and I realized, finally, this was real. (0:34:01)

It had happened. I had been not in a tent with people pretending to be some kind of monsters, or giving me hallucinatory drugs. That had happened. I don't know if they want us to survive because of altruism, or because they need us in some way, or it's probably a bit of both. And that's maybe part of the reason they seem so formidable, and so frightening, and they are so determined to do what they're going to do, because they need us. (0:34:39)

And at the same time, there's that level of love too, that you can find in the way they teach. So, life went on, and we realized that they were real, and I thought to myself, well, maybe I should try to recontact them. I mean, this is amazing, they were real. And Annie and I discussed it, and she said, well, why don't you go back to the place where it happened? We had figured out pretty much where in the woods it had happened. (0:35:10)

At night, and sit there, and just as an indication that you're interested in continuing. And I thought, that sounds rather scary. And so I said, okay, good, let's do it. We'll do it tonight. She said, we? No, I have a baby, a little boy to raise. (0:35:39)

You are going to do it. And when I heard that tone in her voice, I knew I was going to do it. So, off I went into the woods the first night, and I will tell you, that first night, I only got to the edge of the garden, and it took a conscious effort to put one foot in front of the other, to walk at all. (0:36:09)

I was just almost paralyzed with fear. But at the same time, there was a sense of wonder. I remember it was an early summer evening. It was, I guess, it was in, must have been about April of 86. And there were lightning bugs everywhere. (0:36:25)

I don't know, do you have lightning bugs in this country? No. Okay, these are little beetles that have lights. They signal each other with lights in their rear ends, and they shine, and their lights come up, and they look like little stars. They're beautiful things. And the woods are full of them in the spring, when they are in their mating season, and they're all shining their codes, and there's all kinds of intricacies in the lightning bug world. (0:36:56)

Of course, there are predator lightning bugs, who pretend to be the lightning bugs, that the male lightning, the lady lightning bugs, that the male lightning bugs like, and then when they go to them, they get eaten. That's nature, right? The male lightning bugs are dark. They don't light up, only the girls. True among us, too, I think. (0:37:24)

In any case, it was a beautiful night. The lightning bugs made it look like the stars had come down to the earth, and I got to the edge of the garden. I couldn't go another step, and I went back into the house, and she said, that was quick. I said, well, yeah, I just didn't make it. (0:37:43)

But eventually, I did make it, and I started to go down there, and it was really scary the whole time, because they were a palpable reality in my life, boy. They were real. I knew they were real, and I did not know what they were. And I will tell you something about the human mind, that you probably, if you've never not experienced this in your life, you know it's true. Or you don't know it's true, but it is. (0:38:03)

Curiosity is actually more powerful than fear. That's why we're here. We're more curious than afraid. And yes, human beings got eaten a lot, all the time in the past, because they were too curious. But not all of them. More of us survived, and we learned how to satisfy our curiosity. We began to learn what the world was about, and that's what was happening on those nights. (0:38:29)

It went on for a while, and we published communion, and I began to... they were there. I could feel their presence, but they weren't... I didn't see anything, but I got used to it. I got to the point, I had a flashlight. It was about this long, and it was so bright that when you turned it on, you could have started a campfire with it, I'm sure. (0:39:08)

But Ann said, well why don't you use a smaller flashlight? I can see the glow of that thing in the bedroom, when you're a quarter of a mile away, down in the woods. I said, yeah, I'm basically taking the day with me, am I not? So I got a little pen light, a little tiny thing. I still carry these. This isn't the same one, but it's a little light like that. (0:39:25)

And I started using that, and things began to change very slowly. Then communion was published, and the letters started to come in, and the visitors obviously responded. They were interested now in me, and they began to return to my life. They began to show up. They showed up at the house. (0:39:51)

Annie said, well, you know, they're showing up at the house, and we're going to take advantage of that. We're going to start having people up. And I said, well, who would we invite? She said, oh, I'll find them. I'll find them in the letters. We made lifelong friends that way. Raven Dana, who is still very much with us, I just interviewed her recently on my podcast, Dreamland, again, was one that came up. (0:40:24)

Laurie came. Many people came. Some of them I can't mention their names because they don't want their names mentioned now, even now. But Raven and Laurie were very frank, and they went on television and so forth. They talked about their experiences on the Discovery documentary, on the Visitors documentary. You'll see both of them. And they... Raven was there twice where the Visitors showed up. (0:40:52)

And the second time, the first time, she was in the living room, and she and a group of people were sleeping in the living room, sleeping in quotes. I mean, let's face it, nobody who went to that cabin to see the Visitors slept at all on those nights. So she was there, and they showed up, and everyone was awake, and everyone realized pretty much simultaneously that there was something moving around in the living room. (0:41:21)

And they couldn't move, but they could talk. So they were talking to each other and saying, can you move? I can't move, I'm paralyzed. And they couldn't move. And then these shadowy figures began jumping up like acrobats, jumping up and down in the living room. They did that for a while and left. And that was the first experience. At the same time that happened, there were people sleeping downstairs. (0:41:46)

They were also awake, of course, in the basement, in the rec room. And a friend of theirs came walking down the stairs, big as life, stood at the foot of the bed and said, I want you to know that I'm all right, and disappeared. She had died in an earthquake in 1983 in Mexico City. And that was the first inkling we had of something that Annie would say a few weeks later when she came out of her office after a day of reading and working with the letters. (0:42:15)

She said, quickly, this has something to do with what we call death. This is not just about aliens and flying saucers and people from other worlds. This is so profoundly about us and what we are and what we really are. Beginning with the Enlightenment and the rise of the Industrial Revolution and the increasing material intensity of life on planet Earth, we have lost touch with our souls. (0:42:46)

We've gone soul blind. But the visitors aren't soul blind. And they know this. This is about the soul. Life is about the soul. When you pass out of your life, what you are then, what you have made in the craft of life, is what you will be. (0:43:03)

And they care about that. They care deeply about it, possibly for reasons of their own, possibly because of love. As I've said earlier, it's a very complex situation. It's not all sweetness and light. Okay, so that kept on. And I got better at it, actually. And we had other meetings that came to the cabin again. Again, when Laurie and, excuse me, I'm going to melt up here. (0:43:36)

Laurie and Raven were both in the cabin. We had video cameras everywhere. And by the way, don't even bother ask the question in the Q&A later, because it's very disappointing. I have almost no video, despite the fact that I have been loaded with video for years. There is not a single inch of my apartment that you can go in and not be on video at all times. (0:44:07)

I will show you one video that I have that's obviously anomalous at the very end of this talk. Now, anyway, Laurie and Raven were both there. There were other people there that night as well. And there was a film crew there. And there was a low-light video camera, all low-light video cameras all over the house. (0:44:36)

And suddenly, in the middle of the night, someone woke Raven up in the guest room she was in, punching her on the shoulder, I believe. And she woke up. She thought at first it was a raccoon because it had big eyes. Then she realized there can't be a raccoon in here. She did the same thing I did with the owl. But, you know, the windows in the house were screwed shut at that point. (0:45:02)

I mean, screens were. You couldn't open the screens. And then she thought, oh my God, it's one of them. And it touched her on the arm. And she felt this wonderful electricity going through her body that was very energizing. And it's something I have the privilege of feeling quite often in my life to this day. And it's some kind of profound energy. I don't know what it is, but it's a lovely energy. (0:45:28)

And I wish everyone could feel it. But it's a journey to get to the point where you do feel it, I think. In any case, it asked her, what do you want me to do? And she said, you could walk down that hall, which would take her in front of the cameras. And then it disappeared. (0:45:56)

It woke Lori Varnes up in the next room, and another woman who is also in that room who does not wish to be named. And they had an exchange with it. And then it disappeared. A little later, this is probably just before dawn, Drew Cummings, the filmmaker, woke up and saw this little man with a huge head beside the bed. (0:46:19)

They were in the living room on the convertible couch, staring down at him and scared the hell out of him, of course. But it disappeared. And so he and his wife were awake at this point. In fact, everyone in the house was awake except Ann, who was used to it, and she slept through all of it. She didn't care. (0:46:35)

She was used to the visitors by that point. She wasn't scared of them. And Andrew and I were, my son and I were down in the woods sleeping, camping out, because one of his bedrooms was being used as a guest room. So we're coming up to the cabin, and we see a little hooded figure about yay tall, translucent, come out the front door, come down the front porch, across the deck and running out into the woods, significantly not just going through the trees like they weren't there, but darting around them. (0:47:15)

So it was a physical being of some kind. We get into the house, and Drew Cummings and his wife are standing there on their feet, because they have experienced a huge burst of heat. And they thought so intensely, the heat was so intense, they thought the bed was on fire. (0:47:36)

A physicist who analyzed this whole story very carefully said he thought that the being was using technology to bend light around it, so it was invisible. And the light was not touching it, but going around it. But this would have created a great deal of heat, and it released some of that heat when we were coming up toward the house, because it would have been trapped in the house if we'd walked in the door. (0:47:58)

There would have been no other way except out that door. And that was why it was translucent, because it had released some of the heat. When it released some of the heat, it also made itself less invisible. And when we walked in, and Drew and his wife were standing up, they had experienced that burst of heat. (0:48:20)

So what I'm talking about is something very interesting here. I'm talking about an almost mystical being, at least in our eyes, who also was using a technology to make himself seem perhaps more than he was. But at the same time, his message was fascinating, because he left... the first thing that Raven Dana remembered about him was he had... the eye of Horus had appeared on the wall in front of the bed, with all of the enormous symbolic complexity that that eye holds. (0:49:04)

And so it's a fascinating combination of very ancient human symbolism, an apparent alien presence or non-human presence of some kind, that is meant to seem miraculous, but is actually using a technology. Now that's going to cause us to have to ask a few more questions than we have. We can do better than just shooting at them. That is for certain. Okay, now I'm going to go on. In May of 1989, an implant was put into my left ear. (0:49:41)

This was done by two people. I saw them come into the house, I mean the bedroom. I could not stop them. They rendered me paralyzed, and I couldn't see after a few seconds, just dark. But I saw them come in, I heard them. The alarm system was fully armed, and they did not trip it. There was someone in the backyard. (0:50:10)

I heard them say, as I woke up, I was just dozing off when they came in, and as I came to full consciousness, I heard a male voice say in the backyard, condition red. This is all human. I may have seen something else behind them, but I've never been absolutely sure. That was the attempt to remove the implant, and I'm very glad I didn't. It's still here right now. (0:50:31)

I use it in my work all the time. It is the best research tool you could possibly want, and I wish every scientist on the planet had one and could use it. That's how I feel about it. I'm not a scientist, but I could be one with this thing, because anything I want to learn, I just have to think about it, and it'll come to me right away. (0:50:59)

This is why my books, The Afterlife Revolution, A New World, and the book about the life of Jesus, Jesus and New Vision, and now the new book, Them, have, quite frankly, they're my best books. And they are, excuse me, they are that way because it works amazingly as a research tool. (0:51:26)

And what it, to tell you how it functions, and it was just doing this like crazy earlier today, which means it was working with me on this presentation. (0:51:31)

A little slit opens up in my eye. You can see it, you can, it's not like, it's something you can see, you can see you have your full vision, visual field through it, but if you look against like a white wall, I'm not seeing it now, you can see this slit and there are words racing through it, like typed words, very fast. (0:52:03)

And I met a doctor called Kit Green, Christopher Green, who you can look up on the internet, he's all over the internet. He was a CIA doctor for many years and he studies people like me. And he wanted to, this is just a couple of years ago, at this point the implant's been in for many years, he wanted to know more about it. (0:52:25)

He wanted me to get a cat scan of it. And I thought to myself, he wants a cat scan, but that's just the start. Once he's got the cat scan, he's going to want more. So I said, sure, I'll have a cat scan. And I had to go to my regular doctor and say, I want a cat scan of my ear. (0:52:46)

And that was an interesting conversation, but he eventually agreed to it. He says to me, Whitley, you know, you're not crazy enough to be in a home, but don't push it. We have a great relationship and he doesn't know what to think about me and he's not alone, neither do I. In any case, I got the cat scan and this is the implant here. It's here in my ear. (0:53:26)

And when Dr. Lerma, the doctor who did the surgery, tried to get it out, what had happened was it had gone, slid down into my earlobe here on its own, under its own power. And a few days later, my ear started burning like crazy and it slowly moved back up to where it is now. It moved back to where it belonged, on its own. (0:53:48)

So it's a piece of biotechnology and it's quite real, in my opinion. In fact, I'm certain it is. And I probably have only scratched the surface of the many uses it probably has. And it probably uses me too, to some extent. This is always a give and take. It's a symbiotic relationship. (0:54:06)

That's why I was going to call the book Body Terror and Annie said, no, it's not about that. Call it communion because that's what it's about. And that is to say, the sharing of self, the sharing of self is what it's about. And you give and you get in a sharing of self. (0:54:29)

And the giving is pretty scary and the getting is pretty wonderful. That's the whole nature of that type of experience. So, the implant was... the first... after Annie passed away, we knew that this had something to do with... all had something to do with the dead. We knew that for certain because of all of the stories people would tell of their dead friends and relatives showing up when the visitors were there, as it happened at our cabin. (0:55:07)

And let me tell you one of those stories, in fact. Early on, I started to get calls from my agent. And this is before the internet. I started to get calls from a man in Atlanta, I believe. And he was desperate to talk to me. And he had found my literary agent, which, you know, before Google was not an easy thing to do. And I figured, you know, I'm very open. I like to talk to people. I'm not the kind of guy who hides. (0:55:28)

And so, I thought, sure, of course I'll call him. And the agent called me and said, this guy's desperately trying to get a hold of you. And so I called him. And he said, Mr. Stuber, I have something I want to tell you. And I want to know afterwards if... what you think of it. He said, a few nights ago, my wife and I were in the living room. And our dog was asleep on the hearth. He's very old and we'd already taken him out. He woke up suddenly and got very nervous. (0:55:58)

And my wife said, I need to take him out again. And it was odd, but we did it. And as she walked out the door, she said, there's a plane on fire going in. You're going to get a call in a few minutes. Because he was with the FAA, the Federal Aviation Administration. And at the next moment, their little seven-year-old boy came running downstairs saying, Mommy, Daddy, Mommy, Daddy, little blue men came into my room. Remember the little blue men? One day you will look just like us. (0:56:33)

Came into my room, and they had Bobby, his older brother, with him. And he said to tell you he's all right. He had died in an auto accident ten days before. And the man wanted to know if there was any reason whatsoever to believe this story. (0:56:51)

And I have never been so grateful in my life that I could say to him, yes, there is reason to believe that story. It's a story I hear frequently. And there was a silence on the phone, and I know that was because he couldn't speak. And it moves me now to remember that moment. This has something to do, as Annie said, with what we call death. It's more than we can imagine. It is so much about us and who we are and what we are. (0:57:27)

And one of the things that's going on now, nowadays, is that people like Dr. Green... whoa, let me back up a minute. I forgot an important part of the story. This is a complicated story. So, I get this done. It's Tuesday, before I'm going to get this done on a Thursday. I have been thinking about the fact that Dr. Green will want the implant in the end. He'll try to get me to give it to him. (0:58:01)

Now, remember, it's a two-way street here. So, someone is noticing the fact that I might get it taken out again. Of course, I would never do that, but they couldn't be sure of that. I'm often waked up, as I will tell you at the conclusion of the lecture, at about three o'clock in the morning to do a meditation with the visitors. The night after night. And with my wife, as well, who is by no means not with me. She is with me. That's why I wear both rings. One is mine, and one is hers. (0:58:37)

We're still married and still doing this together. We're just down to one body at the present time. We'll soon have no bodies, and then maybe you'll hear from us in another way. In any case, I'm doing the meditation. It's actually about four. I was a little late starting. And suddenly, there's a knock on the door of a special kind that I recognized immediately. (0:59:07)

And there was a time when I never would have moved. I would have been terrified by that knock, but no more. I went and opened the door, and there was a man there, two men, one of whom I've seen many times in my life. He is not a normal man. He could walk down the street. He has other powers and other abilities. And they are there to explain how the implant works. (0:59:29)

They go through the whole thing, and they explain it in detail. All of what I've already told you. And they explain that the one thing I didn't understand were the words flashing past so fast, because they seemed useless. And I could never follow them. And they explain that those words are actually being pulled out of my unconscious and brought forward into the edge of consciousness, so they will inspire me. (1:00:01)

It works like a muse, and it's pulling things out of my own mind that I have forgotten, or I'm not thinking about, that are relevant to the work I'm doing. That's why it's such a good research tool. (1:00:13)

I think that's incredibly cool. It's not something we know how to do, but the fact is it can be done. And then they tell me that the thing was designed by a man named Konstantin Rodive. And I vaguely recognize the name, but I don't make a connection, and they leave. And, you know, a little later, the next day, I went to look at the video camera, and as I already knew would be the case, the cameras had turned off just before they came, and then turned on again afterwards. (1:00:48)

That happens so often. In fact, the last time that happened was about a week ago, or two weeks ago, and it's been a long-life frustration. For whatever reason, this does not want to be seen on video. So, at least not on my video. Okay, so now I knew a lot more about the object and why it was there. They gave me an impetus to not take it out under any circumstances, because, you know, I'm a writer, research is my life. I want that tool. (1:01:22)

So, I had... I was thinking to myself, what do I tell Kit Green? And he decided that wasn't actually the implant. He decided that that was something that one of the x-ray technicians must have put there. And they didn't put anything there, and so I said, oh yeah, that's probably what it was. And he forgot about it, fortunately. In any case, I was thinking about that name, Konstantin Roday, and I thought, wait a minute, that's Rodavay. And Konstantin Rodavay was the great practitioner and inventor of electronic devices that could contact the dead. (1:02:13)

And I thought, my God, he did this. This is technology from the other side. This is... this is what this is. And I was thinking to myself, I think that's right. A few days later, I was talking to a dear friend who... and I'd been talking to all of my friends at that point, and saying, you know, do you have this little slit, and you see... and he was the only one who said, well, yes, Whitley, I do. (1:02:46)

I've seen that in my eye for years. I've often wondered what it is. He happens to be one of the world's leading experts on the work of Konstantin Rodavay. And I thought, that's it. This is technology, not from aliens, but from our own dead. And I think it represents a possibility for the human future. That if we can learn to ignore the denial, and open ourselves to the love that is available to us from the other side, there will be support from there. (1:03:26)

I think mankind can reignite a long-lost love affair with mankind. We can do this. This is possible. All right. Now, this next slide is... I don't think this is my brain, no. This is Dr. Gary Nolan's work. And Dr. Nolan, you can... if you google G-A-R-R-Y-N-O-L-A-N, Gary Nolan, you'll find all of this work. It's now out in the public, because he doesn't have a security clearance. And he has, as he puts it, I've got tenure. (1:04:04)

I've created something like 10 companies. He's immensely rich. He's a young man. He's a genius. (1:04:10)

And he can just do damn well what he pleases. And what he pleases is to talk about things like the brains of close-encounter witnesses and psychics. This is the brain of a close-encounter witness or a psychic. And you see how dense those little things are. In a normal brain, there are much fewer of them. (1:04:43)

And those are connections between the two parts of the executive function of the brain, the caudate and the putamen. And they transmit information back and forth. And they think that a lot of the people who remember this in detail have unusually dense matter, white matter, it's called, between the caudate and the putamen. I don't. I have high normal. (1:05:18)

So I think probably anyone can remember this, but most of us just don't. We choose not to, like I chose not to, until finally it just basically... they hit me over the head with themselves and said, hello, we're here. We're sick of your pussyfooting around and running around with guns. It's time for you to step up and do what your soul probably agreed to do a long time ago. All right. Where are we on time? (1:05:42)

So that's why many people can do this very well. And why I think I am an example of the fact that probably anyone can do it. But it's just that some close encounter witnesses, they have much richer, more complex, long-term, detailed relationships than I do. I have to really sift through my life to get this right. And there are a lot of them who will tell you all kinds of things that they've been told. (1:06:22)

I'm never told a thing except you're doing it wrong. Let's try again. I think I'm a living example of what happens when somebody who's no good at this actually tries to do it. And proof that it can be done by anybody. This is the brain of somebody special, but that's not me. Okay. Now, right now... Oh, this is the face. (1:06:59)

You've seen it before, of course. And the reason that so many letters were written, so many of you are here, so many people have thought about this. The eyes, they're a trigger. They're a mnemonic. They cause people to remember seeing that kind of a face. That's what all the letters were about. (1:07:23)

This is contact. That's what it was. I didn't know it at the time. I was just trying to remember what the thing looked like and sitting there with Ted Jacobs, the artist, and describing it and he was drawing it and then later painting it. But that was what... and they knew, they knew perfectly well what would happen when that book came out. I'll tell you a story about, just as an aside, we've got a couple minutes left. (1:07:46)

An editor at William Morrow & Company, Bruce Lee, not the martial artist, but just he was a... he'd been a military intelligence guy and now he was the history, military history editor at William Morrow & Company. He walked into a bookstore right after Communion was published with his wife to see if it was moving off the shelves at all in Manhattan. They lived in Manhattan. And he noticed two people sort of in overcoats and hats and it was not winter, it was like that would have been October. In any case, they were inappropriately heavily dressed, put paging through the book and so he went nearer to see if they were... what they thought of it. (1:08:39)

And he saw this one of them was paging through it, paging through it very quickly, unusually quickly and they were laughing and saying, oh, he got this wrong, he got that wrong. And he thought, what is going on here? How would they know? And suddenly one of them stopped and looked up at him. (1:08:59)

He was face to face with those eyes. And he thought, perhaps it's time for us to leave the bookstore. He said to his wife, let's go, let's leave the bookstore. And they were, the two beings walked out behind him, still laughing about the book. So I was on author tour at this point and my editor called me up and said, there were no cell phones, I don't recall having a cell phone, so he probably got me by an airport page, I think it was. (1:09:37)

And of course, it was very extraordinary and exciting and I got to him. He said, Whitley, I've got good news and bad news. Oh my God, the book's a disaster. I said, well, Jim, this is another editor, Jim Landis was my editor, Bruce was not my editor. Jim, what's the bad news? I practically dropped my teeth when he says, the visitors think your book is ridiculous. I said, what? And he said, well, that's the good news. (1:10:12)

And he told me the story and he said, now we all know you're telling the truth. And that's life with the visitors. They pull the rug out from under you and save your ass both at the same time. That's the way they do. And that's how you learn because this is a school. It's a school and we're all in it. (1:10:33)

And some of us are grad students like you or you wouldn't be in this room. Others are different places in the process of learning in this school. And it's a good school. And our job here in the school now is going to increasingly over the next few years, after the summer you had here last summer, is going to keep this school going. (1:10:51)

We got to figure out how to keep this school going. And if we do, they will help us. And they will help us, those of us who are in contact with them, in unexpected ways. And we need to be ready to use that help. And I have no idea how it will come, but I hope it will come. I say hope because you never, never second-guess the visitors. You never know for sure what they may do. (1:11:18)

Everything they do is always very asymmetric. What they end up doing is never what you expect in my estimation. I'm working on a new book about... oh, this is the communion letters. Annie put these letters. This is about 115 letters. And you can get this online. It's available as a Kindle. And I think also a paperback. And they're wonderful letters. And I'm using some of them. (1:11:50)

I'm doing a very deep analysis for some of them about my new book, which will be out, I hope, around Christmas or shortly thereafter, which is basically a study of how the visitors are toward us. How do they treat us? What do they think of us? What are they like? And how can we learn about them by learning about how they treat us, both good and bad? And this is the cover of the new book. (1:12:23)

It's called Them. And you'll see it soon, I hope. Now, I'm going to show you, you know, we saw a lot of UFO video today. Some of it was not so good. Some of it was very good. Some of it seemed to be something other than what it seemed. (1:12:38)

This particular piece of video, and I brought it on purpose. One of the things you always notice whenever you go on the internet, you see UFO video that people have, and it's always strangely blurry. And, you know, why is it blurry? I mean, I've got my cell phones better than that, and I'm a cheapo, right? You know, I don't buy expensive stuff. (1:13:00)

And, but every, it seems like everybody who gets a UFO video is using a cell phone from 1988 and then don't know how to use it. The reason is very simple. It's blurry because you can do CGI more quickly if you blur it and you can't see the telltale fact that it's actually a computer graphic, and that's why most of those videos are fake. (1:13:26)

This video was taken in 2004 off the deck of a family's home in British Columbia. And contextually, at the same time, a UFO researcher there, Brian Fyke, who gave me this video, was observing, getting all kinds of UFO reports and abduction reports. This is this video, and if you look carefully, when you see it, we'll, there it comes, completely, you see those, see the little sparks around the edges? That's because it's got a very intense magnetic field, I have been told by a scientist who looked at this. (1:14:08)

And you look closely at it, it's morphing and changing inside. There's something going on with that object, and you can see it very clearly. What we did with this, this is raw video, it's not been enhanced in any way, but we duplicated each frame seven times because it's quite short otherwise, and it just goes out and disappears. (1:14:33)

And, you know, the guy's doing all the yelling of four-letter words and stuff, that's why there's no audio on it, there's no point. He doesn't say anything particularly interesting except the usual holy... that sort of thing. Anyway, that's a piece of real UFO video, and it's clear. So there are real physical objects out there, at least physical at times, and whether it's always there and it ends up in some garage on another planet, or it's something else entirely, we cannot be sure. (1:15:10)

But at the same time, video, this video was being made, and there were UFO reports from all over the area. A book, a lady called Karina Sables, with a friend, was having a very difficult close encounter experience, but she was... they were strangely called in some way to go to an isolated road where they encountered greys, these little dark grey beings, and they had glowing green eyes in this case, and they ended up with significant medical injuries that had to be treated medically. (1:15:48)

So there's very little question about it, that something did happen to these two women, something physical. So I just wanted to point that out, because this is an experience that is very ambiguous. It ranges from a being that is sort of half-translucent, but is obviously using technology to make itself seem like a mythological figure, to experiences with implantation that are physically real, but have remarkable, unusual effects, to the presence of the dead in this experience, to a point where they can actually affect the physical world. (1:16:27)

So you see how different this is. It's not simple. It's not simply aliens from another planet. But I will say this, if there are aliens from another planet involved, I'm not absolutely sure I would be comfortable going to that planet, but it is definitely one hell of a place. There's no question about that. (1:16:45)

Now this last video, after Annie passed away, about six weeks later, I began to be waked up at three o'clock in the morning by someone blowing in my face, or a little dry kiss, or tweaking my toe, or tweaking my nose, or pulling my ear, or ringing a school bell in the living room. And so I was getting up and I was doing this exercise I call the sensing exercise that I learned in the Gurdjieff Foundation. G.I. Gurdjieff was an Armenian mystic who created this foundation. (1:17:24)

It's a system of waking yourself up to more of what you are. And I embraced it, and I've been, Annie and I were doing it all, I've been doing it most of my adult life, and you can find out more about it by reading a book called In Search of the Miraculous by P.D. Uspensky. In any case, there are lots of different disciplines that do this same exercise, and for some reason they wanted me to do it at that hour. (1:17:48)

I later found that there is a yoga discipline that uses it, and it's called Brahma Muhurtha time, the time of learning. It's the time of day when the mind is most open, and they wanted me to to sit and take my attention out of my mind so that they could enter it and engage with me. (1:18:23)

I'm no channeler, and I would not trust myself for a second to be a channeler, but they help me immensely, because they tell me all kinds of things I need to know in my work and in my life, and it's very, very useful. And so I was doing that, and I kept, I have all these cameras, and I was, maddeningly, nothing they ever did showed up on the cameras until one night, finally, they woke me up. (1:18:53)

This is me. You can see I'm sleeping in bed. It's about three o'clock in the morning. It doesn't show the time on here. Now, there is my phone on the bedside table, and I'm sound asleep, and finally, they woke me up in a way that was visible on video. Keep watching. Out of nowhere, it just falls. (1:19:29)

Of course, here he is. Whoa, what happened? He's looking to see where the phone is. What's going on? Then I get up, and oh, no, God, it's not easy to do this every night. I've been doing it every night for many years now. Now, here it is close up. All on its own. (1:19:52)

That is the only video I have of, that is demonstrably unusual, of them doing something. You don't see me go running out into the, I was obviously waiting. You don't like to be late to school, so I was hurrying. Anyway, that's my life now. My life with them is I meditate at one o'clock in the afternoon with a group of friends. (1:20:11)

I meditate on Zoom. I meditate at 11 at night. I do this exercise, and I do the exercise at three in the morning. Excuse me, at three in the morning. I've got a lot of allergies, so please, please, I have fortunately not had a sneezing fit. I was very worried about that. In any case, this is night after night, seven days a week. (1:20:29)

The idea of vacations has obviously not occurred to them, whoever they are, at least not as far as I'm concerned. And I have to tell you, this very hard life has turned into, and perhaps has always been, depending on how I chose to look at it, the most wonderful life any human being could ever be privileged to live. And I thank you all so much for listening to my story. Thank you. (1:20:59)
