I've read a lot of books and some of them are... they make assumptions or they make arguments that are built on other conjectures and whatnot. So they're not necessarily fact, but why are they untrue? Okay, so for example, there's been a big research effort by a guy called Isaac Coy to gather and republish, make available every scrap of UFO information that's ever been published. (0:10:37)

That is all the fanzines and magazines and books and so on. And although it looks like a huge amount of information, it does boil down to a lot of repetition and quite a lot of fiction and manipulation by those writers. Because in the 1960s, 70s, and partly also in the 80s, there was such a boom of interest in the topic of UFOs, extraterrestrials, and so on, that there were many conflicting interests. (0:11:08)

There were a lot of people trying to make fast buck from it. When you start to look at the cases themselves, they just fall apart in your hands most of the time. That's not to say all of them do. But for example, when I was working with Jacques Vallée on getting 500 cases together for our book, Wonders in the Sky, I'd say we rejected 15,000, possibly. (0:11:39)

I don't know. I mean, between the two of us. So we were left with 500, some of which even today, we've also discarded. And now we're preparing a better catalogue for the future. (0:11:46)

So yeah, I mean, 99% sounds slightly hyperbolic. But to be honest, that's how I feel. Because it just seems like every time I grab a case and start looking at it closely, it just falls apart, it becomes ashes in my hand. So it's an enormous frustration. If you're studying any other field as a biologist, or, I don't know, a historian, and every time you started to look deeply into a battle that happened, or whatever, you discovered that battle never actually happened. It does change your outlook on these things. But that doesn't mean I'm totally skeptical.
