It was the middle of the day. He saw his son in a ranch hand struggling, trying to free a calf from a barbed wire fence, and he ran out and then the calf broke free from the fence and flew away. It was at the end of a rope that was going up to this huge airship that was flying over, and the airship had evidently somehow lassoed the cow, the calf, and the airship flew away with the calf bawling at the end of the rope. Two days later they found the calf mutilated about two miles away, and he reported it because he was pretty freaked out. I mean, there were no airships back then. This is before the invention of the Zeppelin, and he had heard about the great airships that were being seen, but this one took his darn cow, and he was going to do something about it. (0:29:04)
And so he announced it, and he was so adamant about it. He was the county constable. He was the chief law enforcement officer of the county besides the sheriff, and he resigned his position as constable to devote more time trying to figure out who these people were. Well, this story went around the country, and Jerry Clark dismissed it and said, oh, there's nothing to it. (0:29:26)
He was a member of a liar's club, which was a story that his son came up with about 40 years later. And, you know, I am looking at the case as a real case, so go figure.
