Chris O'Brien は同時期に狂牛病が発生したことと、crop formation の複雑化の間に謎の関連（地球精神 Gaia から警告、Jacques Vallee の control system …の類）を想定しているが(*1)、それは幾段階もの飛躍と無理がある。
むしろ、
- 1983年に US 大統領 Reagan が SDI (Strategi Defense Initiative: 戦略防衛構想) を発表し、
- 高出力レーザーの軍事応用が本格化した
ことが直接の原因だろう。
これにより UK では軍が UK で多発していた crop formation 騒ぎに乗じて、高高度の軍用機から高出力レーザーで人工的なパターンを穀物畑で作成し兵器化のテストしていた…これが crop formation の謎の正体だと判断する。
だから、高出力レーザーのハイパワー化と制御技術の発展によって、crop formation も年を経るに連れて どんどん複雑化した。
UK の軍当局はこの秘密実験がバレないようにするため、
- crop formation は UFO（= orb） によって創られたのだ
という方向に情報工作（目撃証言の捏造など）を仕掛けてきた。

Ranchers fear that more than anything than mad cow. But hoof and mouth disease before mad cow was the... it's so contagious, and you don't see outward signs of the disease. You can't tell if your animal has it, and they spread it. It's really bad. So the combination of mad cow disease and hoof and mouth disease caused the English government to dictate that every single head of livestock in the British Isles was to be destroyed. (1:35:06)
So all through the end of 95 through 96, they killed 4.5 million head of cattle in England. As they were finishing up burning the last bodies, 4.6 million. There's one of the slaughter pools. This crop circle was formed in less than 40 minutes in broad daylight. This is a real crop circle. And right as the last animals were being killed, this really enigmatic crop circle was created. And when I told Lawrence this, he was pretty amazed. And I said, well, Lawrence, you know about prions, right? They didn't discover what they were until the year after they finished killing all the cows and burning them. That's when they discovered that you can't kill the prions by burning cows unless you're burning them in a blast furnace. (1:36:05)

I said, well, they sold it to 70 countries as fertilizer. 20-year vegetarians are dying of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in England, okay?
